AMATEUR ROCKETRY SAFETY

How it is safe to make the rocket engine and to start a rocket?
On this question there is only one answer - It is impossible. Such employment basically cannot be safe. The chemical energy concluded in 30 grams of fuel, is capable to lift this fuel, the engine containing it and a 100-gramme rocket almost on kilometer. The same energy, having liberated not when it is necessary, many troubles can do - to lose an eye, a finger and other necessary parts of a body it is possible easily. However the level of danger can be lowered essentially if it is good to understand properties of materials with which you work, and to follow simple rules:

1. Any mixes of oxidizers with combustible are dangerous. At work with such mixes it is necessary to be ready to flash at any moment. The risk strongly increases at use of reactants of unknown cleanliness. To work in goggles and mittens from a clap or a canvas.

2. It is inadmissible dangerous to manufacturing rocket engines are: oxidizers: KClO3(and other chlorates), KMnO4, permanganate of kalium, potassium permanganate any peroxides; combustible: phosphorus; mixes: dry mixes of metal powders with oxidizers, dry mixes KClO4 with any components;

3. On a workplace it is necessary to hold a minimum of reactants. All other combustible materials should be cleaned from a premise. Any heating to spend only with the control of temperature, never to use open fire. Near an output there should be fire extinguishing means - a bucket with water or sand. Never bend above structure at its manufacturing, especially heating.

4. New experimental mixes it is necessary to do all in quantity no more than 1 gram and to test for sensitivity impact and friction. For such tests take the volume of a mix equal to a match head. The mix is considered concerning safe even if at very strong impact by a hammer on a steel or stone surface there is no explosion.

5. All tests of engines and starts of rockets is necessary for making in view of high probability of explosion and a unforeseen direction of flight. To connect the battery to system of electroignition it is necessary only at the moment of start and to disconnect right after it. Never use bickford fuses at tests and NEVER APPROACH To not WORKED ENGINE BEFORE 5 MINUTES.

6. Depart on safe distance. If the case of a product from a paper the distance equal to the calibre of a product taken in millimeters and expressed in meters will be safe. For products from plastic and metal increase this value on 2

7. At connection of wires to an igniter have visible break between wires and a source of a starting current.

8. Do not start something without systems of rescue. The rocket falling from height in one hundred of meters has very much greater speed and is very dangerous.

9. Do not start something close to structures. The minimal distance up to structures is height of flight increased on 5.

10. Do not start something close to any obstacles (trees). The minimal distance up to an obstacle, is height of an obstacle increased on 10.

11. Do not start something at a strong wind. Admissible speed of a wind no more than 10 km/s.

12. Reliably fix directing pad.

13. Do not equip a rocket with pyrotechnic structures, devices of self-liquidation. They can not switch in time, and work after falling a rocket when it will be picked up by the casual passer-by.

14. Do not give the products equipped by fuel or other charge, to other people. They are not able to address with it, only you know, how it should work and can safely use the product.

Do not forget, that your products can represent danger to other people.
